Join author and adult industry expert Lynn Comella for a lively discussion of her new book, Vibrator Nation: How Feminist Sex-Toy Stores Changed the Business of Pleasure. Drawing on more than eighty interviews with pioneering retailers and industry insiders, including the owner of The Tool Shed, Milwaukee’s award-winning erotic boutique, Comella takes a deep dive into the evolution of the consumer market for sex toys, tracing its emergence from the early 1970s to today.
Lynn Comella, Ph.D. is an associate professor of gender and sexuality studies in the department of interdisciplinary, gender, and ethnic studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. An expert on the adult entertainment industry, her research explores a number of broad sociological themes, including the relationship between sexual politics and consumer culture.
An interdisciplinary scholar and researcher, Comella received a Ph.D. in communication from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; an M.A. in gender studies and feminist theory from the New School for Social Research; and a B.A. in psychology, with minors in anthropology and women’s studies, from Penn State University.
She lives in Downtown Las Vegas with her husband and their three mischievous cats.
